Xandra van Rossem (Eemnes) is a multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of music, craftsmanship, and visual art. Raised in an artistic family—with a jazz musician/painter as her father and a mezzo-soprano as her mother—an artistic path came naturally. She studied at the Hilversum Conservatory and built a career as a jazz singer (1984–2016).
In 1993, she obtained her master’s certification as a goldsmith and worked in Amsterdam as a goldsmith and diamond setter. From 1997 onward, she expanded her practice into graphic design, composition, and photography.
Philosophy
Her work is rooted in Advaita Vedanta, where self-realization is central. Within this tradition, consciousness cannot fully know itself; language and intellect fall short. Photography, by contrast, opens a gateway to a direct, visual awareness of the present moment. For Van Rossem, photography is not documentation but a way of being—an ongoing state of presence in which mysticism and science converge.
Work
Over thirty years, her practice has evolved into an exploration of visual metaphors. In layered collages, a tension emerges between structure and openness. Symbolism and fragmentation create space for multiple interpretations, while underlying philosophical and sometimes dystopian themes translate into a universal, often surreal visual language.
Atelier
In her studio, Van Rossem designs and creates unique jewelry using precious metals and gemstones. These pieces function as concentrated expressions of her visual language—tangible objects in which technical precision, materiality, and imagination converge.
